Poteau semifinal stat leaders

By Jim Marsh Sports Correspondent

While Poteau’s football team had one fewer loss (2) than Wagoner (3) entering the Class 4A state semifinal at East Central University’s Norris Field in Ada on Friday, the Bulldogs unleashed all they had and and won every phase of the game from the first play of game to the final horn. Wagoner won the game 30-0.

The Bulldogs (10-3) started the game as the Pirates like to do, a deep onside kick to about the 35.

Poteau’s return man let the ball hit the ground, and one of the Bulldogs pounced on ball for the first break of the game.

Wagoner processed the ball for six minutes, running 10 plays.

Even though the Bulldogs did not score, they gave the ball to the Pirates at the 2-yard line. The Bulldogs seemed to know the play, for the front seven mauled Jackson Sommers two yards deep in the end zone and earned the first two points on a safety.

Poteau kicked off, and the Bulldogs ran four plays and found the end zone on a 19-yard run. The extra point was good.

On the first series of the second quarter, the Pirates had great field position and after a 24-yard pass from Sam Tecla to Adrian Conchos gave the Pirates their first excursion into the red zone.

Poteau ran three plays and did not make an inch. Poteau sent in Ethan McBee to try a 33-yard field goal in hopes of getting the team points on the scoreboard. Wagoner has a 6-6 wideout who lined up in front of McBee and blocked the try.

Wagoner has so much speed and size. The Dawgs run a deep post and called that for a 77yard touchdown pass.

One highlight for the Pirates would have to be the play of Aiden Sockey, a cornerback who posted back-to-back interceptions. Even with favorable field position, the Pirates simply could not move the Bulldogs’ defense.

Poteau trailed 16-0 at halftime.

Wagoner gave the Pirates a dose of their own medicine — ball possession — holding the ball for 11 minutes and 43 seconds of the quarter.

Wagoner attempted a 38-yard field goal. Dax Collins blocked the attempt and knocked the ball toward the Pirates sideline.

Wyatt Gamble picked up the bouncing ball. Gamble was run down by the Wagoner defense at the Bulldogs’ 39. Poteau made it to the 22-yard line before its offense was knocked back.

Wagoner scored twice more on a 56-yard run and a 1-yard run. Kord Fenton had a 42-yard run in the waining moments.

Poteau had 16 seniors on its team that made its four semifinal in five years.
