Poteau boys, Panama girls win big

By Jim Marsh Sports Correspondent

Poteau’s boys ended a six-game losing streak, while Panama’s girls snapped a five-game skid in LeFlore County Basketball Tournament firstround games at Panama. Pirates rush to Round 2

The Pirates used their speed and quick hands to set the tone of the early. Poteau scored the first nine points very quickly, due in part to their fullcourt pressure. Poteau increased their lead in every stanza. They won the game 76-24.

Dax Collins had his game tuned in on both offense and defense. Collins drained 11 points in the first. With his quick hands, he picked Cameron pockets for six deflections and a steal, with most of those resulting in uncontested layups.

Poteau used its size in the paint as both Dean Odom and Jayden Wooten had carte blanche in the paint. Odom scored a dozen points in the paint, but that was bested by Wooten who scored 13.

Wooten also had four steals.

Brexton Castillo, the Yellowjackets’ center, had his moments also, as he scored 11 points.

Poteau simply had too much horsepower as 13 different players scored.

Poteau totaled 12 steals and produced 24 points off turnovers. The Pirates also shot 8-of-20 from 3-point range.

Scoring: Poteau: Wooten 13, Odom 12, Collins 11, Champ Downs 9, Connor Whitworth 9, Luke Haynes 3, Brady Perry 3, Burke Perry 3, Hudson Burdick 2, Brett Hoffman 2, Darion Brooks 2, Jace Hall 2. Cameron: Castillo 11, Joe Adams 5, Gavin Morgan 4, Mason Francis 3, Dale Beshears 1.

Panama advances to Round 2

The Lady Razorbacks took to the scoring right from the get-go. Panama (5-8) scored the first nine points of the game, and that set the tone as they breezed to a 49-30 win over the Lady Yellowjackets of Cameron (9-4).

The tag team of Hailey Blair and Lexi Bell dictated the pace of the game as they scored 11 of the Lady Porcine’s first 13 points. Panama led by the score of 13-5 after the first stanza, and the lead just kept expanding to 2213 at halftime and 38-21 through three quarters.

Blair and London Dyer had a showdown that turned into a barrage of points by both players. Dyer, a Lady Yellowjacket, kept Cameron in the game as she zeroed in from beyond the 3-point line as she made five shots from long distance and finished the game with 19. Bailey also scored 17 points for Panama. The difference in the game was the scoring from the other scoring of Panama entire roster.

Scoring: Panama: Blair 17, Gabi Whiteaker 12, Bell 8, Karli Anderson 7, Kelcee Ward 3. Cameron: London Dyer 19, Mattie Beutelschies 7, Brooke McCormack 2, Addy Cornell.
