By David Seeley PDN Editor

The LeFlore High School basketball teams swept both Arkoma teams on Monday night at the Howe Gym on the opening day of the 91st LeFlore County Tournament.

The Savages survived a fourth-quarter run by the Mustangs to prevail 6756, while the Lady Savages were too much for the Lady Mustangs in a 48-16 victory.

The Mustangs, after being down double digits in the first half, cut their deficit to 50-45 on a basket by Deuce Walden with 6:17 left to play, which capped a fourth-period opening 7-0 run by Arkoma (10-3). However, that would be as close as the Mustangs got on the night as the Savages ended the game with a 17-11 run to keep Arkoma at bay.

The game was indeed a game of runs. After LeFlore (8-8) scored the game’s first five points for a 5-0 lead, Arkoma ended the opening quarter with an 11-8 run to cut its deficit to 13-11 after a period.

Just as to start the game, the Savages opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 23-11 advantage.

However, Arkoma answered just as it did in the first quarter as the Mustangs outscored the Savages 11-6 to cut their deficit to 29-22. LeFlore led 36-25 at the break.

LeFlore made it 3-for-3 with opening-period spurts as the Savages began the third quarter with a 10-3 run to take a 46-28 advantage, but thanks to backto-back 3-point baskets — the last one coming with five seconds left in the period — helped Arkoma end the quarter with a 10-4 run to cut LeFlore’s lead to 50-38 going into the final quarter.

For the game, LeFlore had four scorers hit double figures, led by Chase Lloyd with 17 points, followed by Westin Durant with 16 points, Dawson Crims with 14 points and Kalobe Hudlow with 12 points. Bo Dacus added eight points.

In defeat, Walden led all scorers with 31 points to lead Arkoma, followed by Bryson Cunningham with eight points, Hunter Harmon and Jesus Rodriguez each with six points and Easton Smith with five points.

An 8-0 start to begin the game helped the Lady Savages (11-3) end up with a 26-4 lead after a period, a 35-6 halftime advantage and a 41-10 lead going into the final period.

Piper Warren led LeFlore with a game-high 16 points, followed by Jenna Woodall with nine points, Alyssa Waits and Lori Cogburn each with eight points, Makenzie Pebley and Kaylen Hudlow with three points each and Kailee Norell with a free throw.

In defeat, Alyssa Wells led Arkoma (2-10) with four points, followed by Kayla Gilchrist with three points, Ellery Oosahwe, Kiara Butler and Ella Smithson with two points each and Hannah Killion and Abigail Ringling with a free throw apiece.
